Internet Governance Activities

ISC staff members contribute to many Internet infrastructure organizations

ISC’s employees and board members are proud to participate in many governance bodies and community initiatives.

CENTR

ISC is an affiliate member of CENTR, the Council of European National Top-Level Domain Registries.

Vicky Risk is ISC’s representative to CENTR.

DNS-OARC

OARC is the DNS Operations Analysis and Research Center, which “brings together key operators, implementers, and researchers on a trusted platform so they can coordinate responses to attacks and other concerns, share information and learn together.” In particular, OARC hosts a number of DNS-related meetings and workshops of interest to ISC. It also has a support role in general DNS operations - measuring the performance and load of key nameservers and publishing the results, providing analysis of DNS performance and post-mortems of attacks, and developing tools for DNS analysis.

ISC was instrumental in setting up OARC and is a “Gold” member.

Ray Bellis is on the Board of Directors, and Cathy Almond is on the Programme Committee.

ICANN RSSAC

Jeff Osborn is the chair of the ICANN Root Server System Advisory Committee (RSSAC), which is the formal body that advises the ICANN Community and Board of Directors on issues surrounding the DNS Root Server System. It is made up of a representative and an alternate from each of the Root Server Operators; Rob Carolina is Jeff’s alternate from ISC. RSSAC also includes a representative from each of the IANA Functions Operator and the Root Zone Maintainer (RZM), as well as a liaison from each of the ICANN Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC) and the Internet Architecture Board (IAB). RSSAC meets in person at ICANN meetings and frequently via teleconference.

Jeff and Rob, along with Ray Bellis, Dan Mahoney, and Eddy Winstead, are members of the RSSAC Caucus.

ISC participates as the Root Server Operator for F-Root.

IANA

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, an affiliate of ICANN, coordinates the domain names, number resources, and protocol assignments that keep the Internet functioning smoothly.

Ondřej Surý is a Trusted Community Representative for the Root Key Signing Ceremony, serving as a Recovery Key Share Holder.

IETF

ISC staff have contributed to IETF for years. We have written numerous IETF standards and reviewed many others.

Ondřej Surý is currently co-chair of the DNS Operations working group.

NANOG

NANOG is the North American Network Operators Group. NANOG holds two large networking conferences a year, plus a series of smaller, free training events. ISC is an occasional sponsor for these meetings.

T. Marc Jones serves on NANOG’s Community Engagement committee.

OSI

ISC is an Affiliate member of the Open Source Initiative. OSI is an industry group promoting open source and the interests of open source publishers.

Vicky Risk is ISC’s liaison to OSI.

RIPE

Réseaux IP Européens (RIPE, French for “European IP Networks”) is the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) responsible for Europe and the Middle East. They also host a network operators’ meeting twice a year that brings together much of the European networking community. ISC staff participate in the RIPE working groups, meetings, and mailing lists, as well as in various RIPE projects, such as the ATLAS project, hosting equipment in Palo Alto. RIPE is an RSO peer, as they operate K-Root.

Ondřej Surý is currently a RIPE Fellow Coach and one of the RIPE Arbiters.
